Both periodontitis and osteoporosis are multifactorial chronic bone diseases closely associated with inflammation and aging. Because of this, some studies evaluate the association of these diseases, a striking characteristic of both diseases is bone loss. This work aimed to review the literature in an integrative way to investigate the relationship between periodontal disease and osteoporosis. A literature review was carried out, where scientific articles published in the last 5 years were selected, using the descriptors “periodontitis”, “osteoporosis” and “periodontal diasease”, through the databases National library of medicine national institutes of health (PUBMED), Periodicos Capes and Scielo. 723 articles were pre-selected, based on analysis of the title and abstract. Afterwards, the studies that met the inclusion criteria of this review were evaluated in full, resulting in a sample of 17 studies. Thus, given the studies analyzed, the results suggest that osteoporosis is a risk factor for periodontal disease and plays a vital role in the progression of the disease, as well as that the existence of the association osteoporosis and periodontitis is even more pronounced in menopausal women. However, the presence of osteoporosis can negatively influence bone resorption already established as a result of periodontitis, being a predisposing factor for the progression of periodontitis. Furthermore, this association is more pronounced in postmenopausal women due to estrogen deficiency. Keywords: Periodontitis; Osteoporosis; Periodontal Disease.pt_BR
