Abstract

The purpose of this article is to explore how cinema has played a fundamental role in society, particularly in shaping the perceptions and values of young people, and how this influence is not without its challenges. The way movies portray love and relationships directly affects the way young people understand these concepts, which can result in both benefits and harms. This article uses the After franchise as an example of this influence. Using three scenes from different films in the series, it finds that the narratives promote an idealization of romance, leading many teens to view these stories as representations of ideal relationships. This phenomenon 10 demonstrates how cinema can influence the construction of unrealistic expectations about love, particularly by perpetuating gender stereotypes that limit understanding of emotional dynamics. For the theoretical basis of this work, authors who deal with love were used, such as Mary del Priore (2005), Tania N. Swain (2023), Valeska Zanello (2022), Renato Nogueira (2020), among others.
